Whenever you get to the bottom of your iced tea, soda, or other cold beverage, do you find yourself crunching down on the leftover ice? This common habit seems to be a great way to cool yourself down on a warm spring or summer day, but it isn’t the best idea when it comes to your oral health. Chewing on ice can harm your smile. Continue reading to learn about the negative consequences of ice chewing and some things you can do to give it up.

Why Is Chewing on Ice Harmful?

When you crunch down on an ice cube, you can crack or chip your teeth. It can also wear your enamel down over time, causing you to experience tooth sensitivity. You could even end up accidentally damaging dental restorations, like fillings, crowns, veneers, and dental implants. Ultimately, it isn’t worth the risk. You don’t want to be left with a dental emergency on your hands.

How Can You Quit Chewing on Ice?

Just like any other habit, chewing on ice can be very difficult to stop. Here are a few tips to help you give it up for good:

  • Know why you do it: Figure out the particular reason that you like to do this. For some, they get the urge to munch on ice because they have an iron deficiency. This is something you should discuss with your doctor. You may benefit from a diet that is higher in iron or an iron supplement.
  • Let the ice melt: If you like the coldness on your tongue, just let the ice melt in your mouth. You don’t necessarily need to bite down on it in order to experience the refreshing sensation.
  • Choose ice slush instead: Choose a softer form of ice to chew on, like shaved ice or slush. This won’t put your smile at the same level or risk.
  • Eat crunchy veggies: Is it the crunch of the ice that you like? Try cucumber or carrots instead. You will even get some of the nutrients you need.
  • Don’t order ice: If you don’t think you can resist the temptation, order your drinks without ice.

Everyone enjoys a frosty beverage from time to time, but absolutely no one wants to end up with a broken tooth that requires an immediate dental appointment. Try the tips listed above so that you can prevent oral health issues in the future.
