Do I Really Need to Remove My New Dentures?

Your new dentures make you look and feel great! In fact, you may like them so much you might never want to take them out. But unfortunately, that’s probably not a great idea. That’s because in order to keep them looking as fresh and clean as they are on day one, you need to care for them properly, and that includes removing them. Here’s why even though you might not want to, you should definitely be taking out your dentures daily!

Deep Cleaning

Dentures are just like teeth in that they need to be brushed and flossed to keep them looking and feeling clean. Declining to brush them regularly can cause them to stain, crack, and develop foul odors. Thus, you should be removing them to brush and floss them at least once a day, and you should brush them while they’re still in your mouth once or twice a day, too.

Soaking

Dentures need to be soaked to stay hydrated and in good repair, otherwise they can become warped and cracked, and will need to be replaced.  The perfect time to soak them is while you sleep, so each night before bed, be sure to clean them well after removing them, and then soak them in a glass of water or denture soak overnight. When you wake up, just rinse them off and your pretty prosthetics will be there to help you take on the day!

Take a Break

Your dentures aren’t the only ones who need a little downtime. In fact, your jaws do, too. Though wearing them can help stimulate your jawbones and slow degradation, keeping them in too frequently can have the opposite effect. In fact, you can actually accelerate degradation if you don’t give your jaw a break. Thus, to keep your mouth healthy and your bones strong, be sure to allow your mouth some time to rest without wearing them.

Remember, your new dentures are likely a boost of confidence and it’s normal to want to showcase that beautiful smile to the world. But to keep them for as long as possible and to prevent any oral health issues, it’s best to remove them nightly and for daily deep cleanings.
