4 Reasons to Schedule Dental Checkups Early in the Year

After the busyness of the holidays, many people find themselves finally taking a moment to catch their breath. Though this is a great time to catch up on shows, read a good book, or just relax after months of hosting loved ones, cleaning, and cooking, it’s also a great time to make an appointment to see your dentist. Read on to learn about four reasons why you should schedule your dental checkup early in the year.

#1: Do It While You Have Time

It may be tempting to stay home during the gap between the holidays and going back to work or school so you can binge your favorite show. As appealing as that sounds, why not save an afternoon for a visit to the dentist? Making the appointment before you have to return to a hectic life of managing work, school, family, friends, and personal time will make it one less thing that you need to work into your schedule.

#2: Catch Problems Early On

Common oral health problems like cavities can cause pain and tooth sensitivity. If the decay gets bad enough, you may end up needing a root canal or a tooth extraction. Gum disease is another common oral health problem that’s easy to treat with prompt detection. But, if the infection progresses far enough, this can lead to gum recession, loose teeth, jawbone erosion, and tooth loss. Catching problems as soon as possible by visiting your dentist at the beginning of the year will allow you to avoid serious oral health problems and keep your smile looking its best.

#3: Maintain a Happy, Healthy Smile

During dental visits, your dental hygienist will clean your teeth and around your gum line to remove plaque and tartar. Next, your dentist will examine the oral cavity and look for signs of oral health issues. Along with brushing twice and flossing once per day, regular dental visits are key to maintaining a happy, healthy smile.

#4: Maximize Your Dental Insurance Benefits

The amount of money you have to pay out of pocket before your dental insurance covers any procedures is called a deductible. For most insurance policies, the deductible resets at the beginning of the year. This means you’ll need to meet it again before any dental treatments are covered. By having your first dental visit at the beginning of the year, you’ll be able to meet your deductible sooner. This means that you’re more likely to receive full or partial coverage on emergency or restorative dental treatments later in the year.

If it’s been a while since you saw your dentist, now is the perfect time to schedule your next dental checkup. The sooner you get in to see them, the longer you’ll get to enjoy having a healthy, bright smile!
